What I discovered about Research
Introduction
It is amazing how television, movies and media fantasize authors. Giving you glimpses into “writers block” and travel getaways for inspiration. The freedom to be creative and work from anywhere in the world whilst earning is a lifestyle so many of us aspire to have.
I started on the journey of aspiring author at the beginning of the year with rose-tinted glasses. I was going to finally write the fantasy story I had been dreaming of in a couple of months.
Boy was I wrong.
The misconception that I had formed that “research” is little bits and pieces has become evident in my journey. I thought I had a vast amount of knowledge, deep insight, as well as a creative mind, until I started to capture my thoughts.
For example, my characters resemble animals or creatures of different kind. There are fuzzy and warm, mischievous, sly, and dangerous types. Well, how hard can that be? I have spent time on a farm, as well as watching wildlife documentaries etcetera.
I began to understand that knowing your subject and having the ability to be descriptive in words as to their nature, appearance etcetera is completely different and that I would need to set aside a huge chunk of my time for research.
Why is it important to do Research?
Because –
- Real facts can change plots in fun ways that had not initially been planned; and
- Knowing the small details can connect the reader in ways that makes the writing feel alive; and
- Learning new truths helps change parts of a story that did not make sense before.
Tips
- Set a timer: This will ensure that hours are not wasted in looking up one small fact.
- Start with a draft: Let the creative juices flow first and that is okay, because facts can be checked later.
- Keep a notepad: Write down cool facts right away, so you do not lose them.
Conclusion
My rose-tinted glasses might be gone, but my passion for my fantasy world is stronger than ever. Research is not a chore but the map that helps us build a better world.
